Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Movie: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Like/Don't Like: Eh, liked

I feel like maybe I should watch this movie again. Because I think I should have liked it more. I mean, it was alright. I guess. But it was long...and long...and kind of slow at times. It didn't have anything to jump start it like the other ones. It just kind of gradually started and didn't pick up steam until the last 45 minutes or so. They spent the bulk of the time playing up the romance between Harry & Ginny and Ron & Hermoine. I vaguely remember that taking up a lot of the book (it's been a while since I've read it so I basically remember that Dumbledore dies) so I get it. Maybe they were trying to be faithful. But maybe they could have been faithful to the parts that didn't involve love-sick glances and longing sighs. What is this, Twilight?

I really hate saying that because I wanted to love this movie. I really did. I love Harry and his gang. I love the books. I love the movies. But I didn't love this one. Neither did the guy sitting a few rows behind me who loudly yawned about every 10 minutes or so. And then I think I heard him snore a few times.

Although the girls behind me were dying...DYING...over it. They loved it. They squealed and kicked my chair and at the funny parts one girl laughed so hard that she spit what felt like crushed up pieces of ice on the back of my head. Ah, youth. (Side note: She also had a very wet and snotty laugh. She sounded like a pug. Weird.)

So I didn't love it but there were plenty of things to like about it. For one thing, there's Alan Rickman. I love him as Snape. Love him! His words just sort of seep out of him. And I thought they did the whole scary part at the lake in the cave bit brilliantly. I was sufficiently scared. Ron and the love potions was pretty funny. Plus, it's just nice to be with them again. Like a family reunion with your fun relatives. Not the relatives who bug you.

Let me know if you've seen it and what you thought.

I thought it was ho-hum. Yawn. Except for the part at the lake where I nearly jumped out of my chair (having given up reading the books after volume four, I didn't know the story line). But mostly I thought it was just slow and kind of boring.

Ditto...I walked out kind of just feeling blah. But Ron and the love potion was pretty funny.

I really liked it. The movie went quite quickly for me. My only negative was the scene at the burrow where they set it on fire, that whole thing never happend in the book.

Okay, Rachel, I'm just going to pretend that I didn't read this.

I'm going to navigate away from this page, and we'll never speak of this blasphemous review.

I loved it. I haven't read the books and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much! I thought it was marvelous. Loved the lake scene. Loved Ron and the love potion. I hate Bellatrix and I want to be Snape's friend. Also, I felt bad for Draco. Poor Draco...being sucked into the dark side. I'm starting book 7 next week because I'm dying to know how he finds the horcruxes.

I'm with Gina on this one, Rachel. I don't usually disagree with your reviews, but I'm afraid I did this time. I thought that yes, there was a lot of romance and less of the action, but I thought the acting was so so so much better that I enjoyed every minute. Although, yeah, what was the deal with the Weasley's house on fire? Weird. I loved Draco, with his angst and evil glances. Super creepy. It seemed to me like, because of the dark ending, you know, Dumbledore DYING and stuff, they tried to keep it light for most of it. I think that's what made it different than the previous one. Lots more humor. Didn't you just love Cormack McLaggen? I sure did.

Oh, one more thing. Watch the second movie and then immediately go see the new one again. Your appreciation for it will skyrocket. That's what we did. Seriously. Oh, and I love Snape, too. Alan Rickman is brilliant.

I haven't seen it yet, but I want to. You may or may not remember that I have had a school girl crush on Alan Rickman since his Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Days. He is such a great actor and strangely attractive - even as Snape.

I just saw it again, and I disagree even MORE heartily.

Haven't seen the movie, so won't comment about that. I just realized how difficult it must be for you to go to the movie theater. Popcorn chewing has got to drive you nuts. :)

You have no idea. The first 15 minutes, when everyone is eating, are a NIGHTMARE.
